Dyspraxia

Overview

Dyspraxia, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects motor coordination, planning, and execution of movement.

Common Symptoms

  1. Movement & Coordination
    • Clumsiness (tripping, bumping into things).
    • Difficulty with balance and posture.
    • Trouble learning new motor skills (e.g., riding a bike, tying shoelaces).
    • Challenges in sports or playground activities.
  2. Motor Skills
    • Poor handwriting or “messy” writing.
    • Difficulty with drawing, using scissors, or fastening buttons/zippers.
    • Problems with keyboard or touchpad use.
  3. Planning & Organization
    • Difficulty sequencing steps in an activity (e.g., making a sandwich, getting dressed).
    • Trouble estimating time or planning tasks.
    • May seem disorganized in schoolwork or personal belongings.
  4. Speech & Language (sometimes)
    • Speech may be unclear due to difficulty coordinating mouth movements.
    • Trouble with rhythm and intonation in speaking.
    • Word-finding difficulties.
